Respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms are an essential part of the principles and values ingrained in Emirati society. The UAE continues to promote and protect human rights by ensuring national implementation of human rights commitments and complying with international standards.
More than seven million foreign workers in the UAE are employed by 260,000 organizations, representing nearly 200 countries. Over 90 percent of the private sector labor force consists of expatriate workers, creating unique challenges for the UAE.
The government is constantly working to strengthen its capacity to protect the rights of different communities that contribute to the country’s growth and development, while simultaneously boosting the rule of law and allowing freedoms via lawful processes and institutions.
The UAE won membership on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2022-2024 term during elections that took place among members of the United Nations General Assembly. The UAE looks forward to continuing its efforts to promote and protect human rights on national, regional, and international levels.
A number of international experts on human rights reiterated that the United Arab Emirates is a pioneer in human rights and has become a prominent partner in advancing the human rights worldwide. During a high-level seminar held yesterday evening via video conferencing from Geneva, the experts said that the UAE is a prominent global model for equality and an exemplary model of interfaith dialogue and coexistence, and its achievements in human rights began since its founding more than fifty years ago.
In the seminar, the experts touched upon the UAE's outstanding achievements in supporting basic rights such as individual freedoms, ensuring equality and equal opportunities between genders, the rights of children, the elderly, and People of Determination, as well as labour rights, combating human trafficking, money laundering, among others.
A leader and key partner in the international effort to address climate change, the UAE will host the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP28, in 2023.
After being the first Middle Eastern nation to sign the Paris Agreement, the UAE was also the first country in the region to submit its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2015. The UAE recently updated its NDC, setting a more ambitious target for curbing carbon emissions 31 percent by 2030, up from its previous 23.5 percent target.
In addition to its multilateral commitments, the UAE actively supports developing countries in their climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, especially through renewable energy, as well as humanitarian relief and prevention. The UAE has provided over $1.5 billion of aid for renewable energy projects in more than 40 developing countries, particularly small island developing states.
