Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the UAE Federal National Council
The UAE at the Parliamentary Meeting: Adherence to Palestinian Principles and Support for Peace
The United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its unwavering support for Palestinian rights and its commitment to a just solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, emphasizing that peace remains the strategic option for ending the conflict and achieving stability in the region.
Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the UAE Federal National Council, stressed that the Palestinian cause faces a growing gap between the clarity of the principle and the international community's hesitation in implementing it. He pointed out that this gap represents the core of the conflict, reflecting the discrepancy between what the world recognizes and what it accepts to postpone politically.
This came during his speech at the meeting of parliaments supporting Palestine, held in Istanbul on the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings.
Ghobash explained that the attempts to displace and forcibly confiscate Palestinian land cannot be separated from a broader context that includes violations of state sovereignty, threats to the security of peoples, and the targeting of vital corridors.
He pointed out that the Palestinian issue has never been merely a land dispute, but rather a historical turning point that redefined the relationship between what is imposed by force and what is accepted through legitimacy. From its inception, it has tested not only geographical boundaries but also the limits of the international system itself—to what extent principles can withstand force.
He added that the Palestinian issue today does not suffer from ambiguity in its solution or a lack of reference points, but rather from a widening gap between the clarity of the principle and the international community's hesitation to implement it. This gap represents the core of the conflict because it reflects the discrepancy between what the world truly recognizes and what it is willing to postpone politically.
He explained that over the decades, multiple paths have been tried, and waves of escalation and de-escalation have followed one another, but the result has remained the same: an unresolved issue and an increasingly complex reality.
He indicated that the conflict today is no longer simply a traditional struggle over land, but has become a struggle over its definition, identity, and narrative—a struggle between a will that clings to history and rights and a will that seeks to reshape reality and impose it as an indisputable truth. This is the most profound danger because it threatens to obliterate the very ability to discern rights.
A Firm and Supportive Emirati Stance
He affirmed that the UAE's position on the Palestinian issue is based on two fundamental pillars: supporting the Palestinian people and their inalienable right to establish their independent state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and supporting a just and lasting peace as the optimal strategic choice for the Palestinian people and the peoples of the region alike.
He pointed out that this stance is deeply rooted in the UAE's ideology and the approach of its wise leadership, headed by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. He emphasized that this commitment is tested during times of crisis, as it is a moral obligation that constantly seeks to uphold Palestinian rights and principles, and is tested in times of hardship.
Continuous Humanitarian Support Despite the Challenges
He noted that the UAE's presence in Gaza was not an emergency response, but rather an extension of a continuous approach, with its contributions reaching approximately 43% of total international aid.
He pointed out that this commitment remained steadfast, even during times when the UAE itself faced direct attacks and threats to its security and stability. This highlights the difference between those who merely raise slogans and those who adhere to values when the cost is high.
A Call for Unity and a Political Solution
Ghabash stressed that the establishment of a Palestinian state begins with Palestinian unity and a unified national decision, followed by genuine Arab and international support that translates into a clear political path leading to a just and comprehensive solution.
He concluded his remarks by emphasizing the importance of translating international support into practical steps that contribute to achieving peace and guaranteeing Palestinian rights.
