Trump criticizes Clooney after he receives French citizenship

US President Donald Trump criticized Paris for granting American actor George Clooney, his wife, Lebanese-British lawyer Amal Alamuddin, and their two children French citizenship.

Trump, whose administration supports anti-immigration parties in Europe, said France has a "terrible" problem with crime and immigration. Clooney, his wife, and their eight-year-old twins received French citizenship by decree published Saturday in the Official Journal.

"Great news! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political forecasters of all time, have officially become citizens of France, a country that unfortunately has a big crime problem because of their horrible handling of immigration," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.

In a New Year's Eve post, Trump added that these problems in France "are very similar to what we had under Sleepy Joe Biden," his Democratic predecessor. Clooney is a prominent supporter of the Democratic Party and one of Trump's fiercest critics.

Trump pointed out that the actor had endorsed Biden during the 2024 US presidential election, but then "ditched" him at a fundraising event, citing concerns about the Democratic candidate's age. He added, "Clooney got more publicity in politics than he ever got for his few, mediocre films. He wasn't a movie star; he was just a regular guy who constantly complained about common sense in politics."
