The UAE at the Human Rights Council: A Roadmap to Save Sudan
A stance not driven by self-interest or bias, but rather governed by historical and moral responsibility and sincere efforts to stop the bloodshed of a war in which there are no winners. This has been the UAE's position towards Sudan since the outbreak of the crisis. Yesterday, Friday, from the heart of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the UAE reaffirmed where it stands, with whom it stands, and for whose sake it acts.
The UAE reiterated that the Quartet's statement provides a clear roadmap to end the conflict in Sudan through a humanitarian truce leading to a permanent ceasefire and a transition to an independent, civilian-led government not controlled by the warring parties.
At the same time, it pointed out that the tragedies perpetrated in Sudan definitively prove that there is no military solution to this civil war. It condemned the attacks against civilians by the Rapid Support Forces in the El Fasher area and by the warring parties throughout Sudan. At the same time, it called on both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to immediately cease all attacks against civilians, which constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.
Aid Access
In his keynote address to the 38th Special Session of the Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in and around El Fasher, in the context of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Jamal Al-Musharakh, urged the warring parties to allow unimpeded access for humanitarian aid.
Ignoring International Calls
In the same vein, Al-Musharakh stressed the need for the international community to ensure that those responsible for these atrocities are held accountable, without exception. He stated, "Unfortunately, the warring party represented at this session continues to launch indiscriminate attacks on markets, villages, and hospitals, while the people suffer from famine. They ignore the international community's calls for a ceasefire, thus prolonging the conflict, and they are using humanitarian aid as a weapon." He emphasized that these actions are not new, as this party has previously provided shelter to terrorists and offered protection to individuals accused of committing genocide.
$100 Million to Support Humanitarian Operations
He added that the UAE reaffirms its unwavering stance and solidarity with Sudan, from its darkest moments to its most hopeful, noting that his country recently pledged an additional $100 million to support urgent humanitarian operations in the El Fasher region. He also affirmed the UAE's full readiness to exert further efforts to support the humanitarian response.
