Norwegian Scatec Begins Construction of Obelisk Solar Project in Egypt
Norwegian company Scatec has begun construction of the Obelisk solar power project with a battery storage system in Qena Governorate, marking a qualitative leap in the renewable energy sector in Egypt.
The Obelisk project is the first and largest hybrid project of its kind in the country, combining a solar power plant with a total capacity of 1.1 GW, supported by an advanced battery energy storage system with a capacity of 100 MW and a capacity of up to 200 MWh. Scatec expects commercial operation to begin in two phases during 2026, with the first phase operating in the first half and the second phase in the second half.
This mega project is part of Egypt's ambitious efforts to increase its reliance on renewable energy, aiming to raise its contribution to the national electricity mix to 42% by 2030 and 60% by 2040. The battery storage system will enhance Egypt's ability to address the challenges of intermittent renewable energy, ensuring stable electricity supplies and enhancing the country's energy security and environmental sustainability.
