| Mitsubishi Power Converts an Industrial Boiler to Run on Pure Hydrogen |
For the First Time in the Middle East: Egypt Operates a Giant Refinery with Pure Hydrogen
Mitsubishi Power has successfully converted a giant industrial boiler at an Egyptian refinery to run on 100% pure hydrogen fuel, significantly reducing gas consumption and carbon emissions.
Mitsubishi Power, the energy solutions arm of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has completed a first-of-its-kind industrial project in Egypt and the Middle East and North Africa region, delivering the first 100% hydrogen-fueled industrial boiler to the Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemical Company (ANRPC) refinery. This achievement, which was contracted on a turnkey basis in 2022, represents a radical shift in the use of clean energy in the regional industrial sector and places Egypt at the forefront of countries pursuing a hydrogen economy.
Technical Details and Strategic Transformation
Mitsubishi Energy undertook the entire project, from design and engineering to the supply and installation of advanced equipment and control systems. The project aimed to rehabilitate and modernize a large main boiler with a production capacity of 100 tons per hour, converting its entire operating system from a mixture of heavy fuel oil and natural gas to a full hydrogen fuel. The new system utilizes 14,000 tons per year of hydrogen-rich gases previously wasted in the production units, reducing natural gas consumption by 24,000 tons per year.
Promising Economic and Environmental Dimensions
This technical transformation translates into direct environmental and economic benefits. The project contributes to reducing carbon emissions by approximately 65,000 tons per year, supporting Egypt's ambitious path towards decarbonizing the energy sector and achieving its sustainable development goals.
The success of the project, built on advanced Japanese expertise and ANRPC's operational leadership, establishes it as a proven, practical model that can be replicated and applied across various heavy industries in Egypt and the region, paving the way for accelerating the adoption of hydrogen solutions as a cornerstone of a low-carbon energy future.
