Diogo Jota's death shocks fans

Liverpool star dies at 28 in car accident

Football fans around the world are in shock following the death of Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota, 28, in the early hours of Thursday morning, following a horrific car accident in Zamora province, northwestern Spain.

Jota, who passed away suddenly, had married Ruth Cardozo, the mother of his three children, just days earlier, on June 22. He described himself as the happiest man in the world in an interview published last Wednesday. He posted a video of his wedding on Instagram hours before his death, captioning it, "A day I will never forget."

He also posted photos from the wedding just five days before his death, captioning them, "Yes to marriage forever." He was on vacation in Spain. Liverpool and the Portuguese Football Federation mourned their player, while Spanish authorities opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident.

He and his brother were killed.

According to police reports, the accident occurred on a highway in the province of Zamora. The car veered off the road before bursting into flames, according to the Civil Guard. It also stated that the two passengers, Diogo and his brother André Filipe, also a professional footballer in Portugal's second division, were dead by the time emergency services arrived.

"Lamborghini Tire Blown Out"

It is believed that the Lamborghini's tire burst, causing the car to veer off the road and crash, then catch fire, according to the British newspaper, the Daily Mail. Jota won the Premier League title with Liverpool last season, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in 37 appearances despite some physical problems.

Jota trained at Paços de Ferreira, spent time at Atlético Madrid and Porto, and impressed at Wolverhampton before joining Liverpool in the summer of 2020 for around €45 million. Jota made 123 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 47 goals between 2020 and 2025.
