The UAE Enters the Top 10 Global Merchandise Exporters
The World Trade Organization's "World Trade Outlook and Statistics" report revealed that the UAE has entered the top ten global merchandise exporters for the first time in its history, ranking ninth among the world's largest merchandise exporters.
Historic Figures and Exceptional Growth
The report also celebrated the exceptional growth in the UAE's total foreign trade, noting that it reached AED 6 trillion (USD 1.63 trillion) in 2025, compared to AED 5.23 trillion (USD 1.42 trillion) in 2024, representing growth of approximately 15 percent.
These figures include the country's foreign trade in goods and services, including oil exports. The report indicated that the UAE's trade in services reached AED 1.14 trillion for the first time in its history in 2025, while the country's non-oil merchandise trade reached AED 3.8 trillion in 2025, marking a historic annual increase of 27 percent.
This achievement, highlighted in the World Trade Organization report, is the culmination of a long journey of diligent work and strategic planning. It reflects the success of the economic and trade policies adopted by the UAE, in line with the vision and directives of its wise leadership, to further open up to the world in trade and investment. This has made the UAE a model of leadership, competitiveness, and global engagement.
Global Leadership in Services and Digitalization
The report also noted the record growth in the UAE's foreign trade of goods and services combined in recent years. The value of its trade with the world rose from US$949 billion (AED 3.5 trillion) in 2021 to US$1.424 trillion (AED 5.23 trillion) in 2024, and the UAE continued its upward trajectory, reaching US$1.637 trillion (AED 6.014 trillion) in 2025. These figures include trade in both goods and services.
In detail, merchandise trade alone reached AED 4.9 trillion, with merchandise exports representing 53 percent of total merchandise trade with the world. Trade in services amounted to AED 1.14 trillion, of which 61.4 percent were service exports to global markets.
The Fruit of a Foresightful Vision
Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade, affirmed that the UAE's achievements in foreign trade, as documented in the latest World Trade Organization (WTO) report, are a direct result of the wise leadership's forward-looking vision and directives to further open up to the world in terms of trade and investment.
He stated that the UAE's entry into the top ten list of merchandise exporters for the first time in its history is a new international testament to the UAE's leadership and competitiveness, reflecting the international community's confidence in the national economy and its ability to achieve significant progress across various global indicators.
He pointed out that the latest WTO report demonstrates that the UAE has become a pivotal player in the global trade system, and that the open economic policies adopted by the country continue to yield exceptional results across all sectors.
The UAE: A Safety Valve in a Volatile Global Landscape
The report addressed the challenges facing global trade, particularly the anticipated slowdown in growth in 2026 due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising energy prices.
The report projects that trade growth in goods will decline to 1.9 percent in 2026, down from 4.6 percent in 2025, with growth expected to rebound to 2.6 percent in 2027. Trade growth in services is also projected to slow to 4.8 percent in 2026 before accelerating to 5.1 percent in 2027.
If energy prices continue to rise, trade growth in goods could fall to 1.4 percent and in services to 4.1 percent in 2026, according to the report. In contrast, the UAE stands out as a country with open and flexible policies, capable of adapting to global changes and capitalizing on any anticipated recovery in international trade.
