Habshan Complex: The Heart of the UAE’s Gas Industry

Habshan Complex.. The Heart of the UAE’s Gas Industry

UAE - Habshan Complex - ADNOC

Habshan Complex.. The Heart of the UAE’s Gas Industry

The Habshan Complex is a cornerstone of the UAE’s energy infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in processing associated and non-associated gas from onshore and offshore oil and gas fields and converting it into high-value products that support the national economy.

The Habshan Complex is also a key pillar in supporting industrial growth in the UAE by contributing to a reliable supply of natural gas and raw materials for vital industries. It supports aluminum and steel production, cement manufacturing, and petrochemical plants, thus contributing to the UAE’s leading position as a global hub for sustainable, high-value manufacturing.

Strategic Location and Rich History

Located 150 kilometers southeast of Abu Dhabi and extending 40 kilometers inland, the complex has been a major center for gas operations in the country since 1981.

The Habshan Gas Complex plays a pivotal role in processing associated and non-associated gas from ADNOC’s onshore and offshore oil and gas fields. The complex’s facilities convert this gas into high-value products, including natural gas liquids (NGLs), condensates, liquid sulfur, and sales gas, which is used to support national infrastructure and partners in vital industrial sectors.

A portion of the remaining gas is reinjected into oil reservoirs to support sustainable oil and gas production. The complex serves as the hub for the company’s gas network and its operational control center.

Developed since the 1980s and 2010s, the complex’s assets feature advanced automation, safety, reliability, and energy efficiency, thanks to a strong team spirit, advanced control technologies, and real-time performance optimization. The complex contributes more than 60 percent of ADNOC Gas’s revenue.

Massive Production Capacities

The Habshan complex includes the Habshan-0/1/2/3/4 gas processing plants, in addition to the Bab LNG facility, located 5 kilometers from the Habshan plants.

The two complexes contain 11 gas processing units with a total capacity of 4,980 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of gas, along with a production capacity of approximately 2,100 MMcf/d of gas for reinjection to enhance oil recovery. This gas is used in the Bab reservoir of ADNOC Onshore, and 250 MMcf/d is injected into the Thamama-B oil reservoir via gas compression units 2 and 5.

The Habshan complex covers an area of 5,760,000 square meters, while the Bab facility covers 650,000 square meters and is located 25 kilometers from the nearest populated area. These successive strategic projects have contributed to enhancing the UAE's ability to meet the growing demand for gas used in vital sectors, heavy industries, and power plants.

ADNOC Gas: Production Capacity to Grow by 30% by 2030

Key Figures

The complex's facilities produce a range of vital products, including:

5.02 billion standard cubic feet (scf) of feed gas processing capacity

3.78 billion standard cubic feet (scf) of sales gas

217,000 tons of natural gas liquids (NGLs)

270,000 barrels of condensate

5,850 tons of liquid sulfur

Strategic and Economic Importance

The Habshan complex contributes more than 60% of ADNOC Gas's revenue and serves as the company's gas network hub and operational control center. The complex boasts advanced automation, safety, and energy efficiency, reflecting the spirit of innovation and teamwork that underpins the UAE's position as a global energy powerhouse.

The Habshan Gas Complex represents a comprehensive model of the UAE’s capabilities in developing the gas sector, from processing, extraction, and reinjection, through the production of condensates, natural gas liquids, and liquid sulfur, to managing the national gas network from a single control center.

With a series of massive expansions that have increased its capacity to 4.98 billion cubic feet per day, the complex has become a vital pillar of the UAE’s energy and economic security, and an essential part of ADNOC’s journey towards a future based on efficiency and sustainability.
